The FDA has finally approved a drug meant to treat low sexual desire in women. The little pink pills that will be marketed under the brand name Addyi has been dubbed the “Viagra for women”. The pill is expected to hit the market mid October.

Addyi, which is produced by Sprout Pharmaceuticals, has also been rejected twice by the FDA with its advisory committee citing potential side effects like nausea, dizziness and fainting. It was only until August 2015 that the FDA’s advisory committee recommended its approval.

Specifically, flibanserin (the drugs scientific name) is meant to treat Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD). According to statistics, lack of libido affects between 5 - 9 million women in the US. Even though there are numerous remedies and drugs that aid in improving female sexual life, none specifically addresses the problem of low sexual desire.

How 'Viagra for Women’ Works

Sprout pharmaceuticals has finally succeeded where many giant pharmaceutical companies had previously failed. Unlike Viagra which works by improving blood flow in the penis so as to treat erectile dysfunction and improve sexual desire, flibanserin boasts sexual desire in women by balancing chemicals in the brain instead of affecting hormone levels.

Victory for Women

Since the FDA announcement, many women and gender equality activists have labeled the approval of flibanserin as a major victory for women. The FDA had previously been accused of gender bias as it had approved more than 20 drugs for enhancing men sexual desires but none had been approved for women. The National Consumers League has labeled flibanserin as the biggest breakthrough in advancement of women’s sexual health after the launch of the contraception pill.

Skeptics

This is because previous versions of the drug were rejected by the FDA. Addyi makers Sprout Pharmaceuticals have in a statement stated that they have addressed all initial reasons for previous rejection by the FDA and more than 11,000 women took part in the trials.

The effectiveness of this 'viagra for women ' is also being questioned as available medical trials data shows that women who used the drug only reported 0.5 to 1 more sexual satisfactory events every month. To some medical practitioners, this shows that it is not effective.

Some medical practitioners also cite that low libido in women can be caused by a variety of issues including current medication, use of birth control pills, use of anti depressants and blood pressure medications. Some skeptics even claim that the HSSD (Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder) is a creation of pharmaceutical industries.

One of the known side effects however is that women on Flibanserin are advised against mixing it with alcohol or prescription drugs as it may result in adverse effects
